What Causes Bells Palsy?

No one knows exactly what causes Bell's palsy, but it is believed to be the result of inflammation or swelling of the nerve that controls facial muscles on one side of the face. This nerve, known as the seventh cranial nerve, runs from the brainstem to the muscles in the face. The swelling or inflammation of this nerve is thought to be caused by a viral infection, although other factors such as trauma, diabetes, and hormonal imbalances have also been linked to the condition.

Bell's palsy can occur at any age, but it is most common in adults between the ages of 20 and 40. The condition is more common in women than men and is more likely to occur during pregnancy or in people with diabetes.

While the exact cause of Bell's palsy is still unknown, several effective treatments available can help reduce symptoms and improve facial function. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for achieving the best possible outcome.
