Groups of Individuals with the Highest Risk of Developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is an injury of the wrist and hand that can cause pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness. It is a common medical condition that affects millions of individuals each year, but some people are at higher risk than others.

Those individuals who spend a lot of time typing or doing repetitive fine movements with their wrists, hands and fingers – such as sewing or computer work – are more likely to develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome than those who do not.

The elderly population may also be at increased risk due to reduced joint mobility or damage to the median nerve caused by degenerative changes in their wrists and hands. Women in particular may be more likely to suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome than men because they tend to have smaller carpal tunnels due to having smaller bones.

Finally, those people living with conditions like Diabetes or hypothyroidism have an increased risk of developing this disorder since these illnesses can affect the body’s metabolism which in turn causes swelling that can put pressure on the median nerve. In all cases, it is important for individuals to take preventative measures whenever possible in order to minimize their chances of developing this potentially painful condition.
