Types of Laser Treatments Used for Shingles

Shingles is a virus that causes a painful rash. The virus is the same one that causes chickenpox. After someone has chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in their nerve tissues. Years later, the virus can reactivate and cause shingles. It is most common in people over age 50, but it can occur at any age.

There are several types of laser treatments that can be used to treat shingles. One type of laser treatment is called photodynamic therapy. This treatment uses a light-activated drug to kill the virus that causes shingles.

Another type of laser treatment is called low-level laser therapy. This treatment uses a low-level laser to help reduce pain and inflammation. Laser treatments are usually done on an outpatient basis, which means you don't have to stay in the hospital overnight. Most people only need one or two treatments.
